Why Vitamin E Works Best Alongside Vitamin C and Plant Oils

Why Vitamin E Works Best Alongside Vitamin C and Plant Oils

Tocopherol, vitamin E, belongs in a routine because it protects the fatty layers of the skin from the daily wear of sun and pollution and helps them hold moisture. It works best in company: alongside vitamin C, which restores it after each use, and inside a blend of light plant oils, rather than as a thick pure vitamin E oil on its own. This piece explains why that pairing matters and how to build it into your routine, whether from one bottle or two.

The relay between vitamin E and vitamin C

Vitamin E sits in the oily parts of the skin: cell membranes and the fats between cells in the outer layer. When ultraviolet light or pollution creates free radicals there, tocopherol gives up a hydrogen atom to neutralize one, which stops a chain reaction that would otherwise damage fat after fat. In doing so, the tocopherol molecule becomes a weaker, spent form of itself.

Vitamin C lives in the watery parts of the skin. It can hand an electron back to that spent vitamin E, returning it to its active form so it can go on working. Each vitamin covers a part of the skin the other cannot reach, and one keeps the other going. That is why products that carry both have shown more protection against sun-related wear than either vitamin alone, and why we rarely use one without the other in a face formula.

Why a blend works better than pure vitamin E oil

Pure vitamin E oil is thick and sticky, and for some people with sensitive or blemish-prone skin it can feel heavy and lead to breakouts. It also works alone, with no vitamin C to restore it and no lighter oils to carry it.

A blend solves all three problems. Light, fast-absorbing plant oils spread the vitamin E thinly and evenly, so it reaches the skin without a greasy film. Many of those oils bring their own fatty acids, which help skin hold moisture in their own right. And vitamin C can be built into the same formula. In short, the vitamin E does its job and the rest of the blend makes it comfortable to wear every day.

Our formulas that pair them in one bottle

The Royal Kalahari Face Serum is our clearest example. Nine plant oils, led by cold-pressed Kalahari melon seed oil, carry vitamins C and E together. Kalahari melon seed oil is light and rich in linoleic acid, so the serum sinks in without a greasy feel. Press four to six drops into face and neck, morning and night.

The Royal Kalahari Under Eye and Lip Serum Roller Oil uses the same idea for the thin skin around the eyes and on the lips: tocopherol keeps its oils fresh, and a vitamin C complex adds brightness.

Our two Ultra Peptide formulas, the face serum and the night cream, pair vitamin E with ascorbyl palmitate, a fat-soluble vitamin C ester, alongside three peptides. They are evening products, made for us by a specialist cosmetic lab.

Pairing them across two layers

You can also build the relay from two bottles. Our Vitamin C Face Serum with Niacinamide is a light, water-like serum built around ethyl ascorbic acid, a stabilized form of vitamin C. Its directions say to follow it with a moisturizer or face oil, which makes it a natural partner for a vitamin E oil.

  1. After cleansing, press three or four drops of the Vitamin C serum into clean skin.
  2. Wait a moment for it to absorb.
  3. Press four to six drops of the Royal Kalahari serum over it.
  4. In the morning, finish with sunscreen.

Watery serum first, oil second: the order follows the thinnest-to-thickest rule and puts vitamin C and vitamin E side by side on the skin. Keep retinol and benzoyl peroxide out of the same routine as the Vitamin C serum.

Keeping the pair fresh

Both vitamins are antioxidants, which means both are sensitive to the light, air and heat they protect your skin from. Vitamin C is the more fragile of the two, which is why our Vitamin C serum uses a stabilized form of it. Keep both bottles capped and away from sun and steam, and you will get the same performance from the last drop as the first.

Questions about pairing vitamin E and vitamin C

Do I need one product that contains both?

No. A formula with both is simplest, but layering a vitamin C serum under a vitamin E oil puts them side by side on the skin just as well.

Which goes on first, vitamin C or vitamin E?

Usually the vitamin C, because it tends to come in a thinner, water-based serum. Let it absorb for a moment, then press the vitamin E oil over it.

Is pure vitamin E oil good for the face?

It is thick, and for some people it feels heavy or leads to breakouts. A light blend of plant oils with vitamin E is easier to wear and does the same job.

Can I use the pair at night as well as in the morning?

Yes. The Royal Kalahari serum is made for morning and night. In the evening, skip sunscreen and finish with a moisturizer if your skin wants one.
