The Story Behind the Rosewood Body Glow

The Story Behind the Rosewood Body Glow

The Rosewood Body Glow brings together two products we make in the same scent, the Rosewood and Litsea Cubeba Imperial Jade Body Oil and the Rejuvenating Body Cream in Rosewood and Litsea Cubeba, because they work best as a pair: oil first on damp skin, cream over it. Both are formulated and scented by Marianella and made by hand in small batches in our Williamsburg, Brooklyn workshop. This is the story of how the two pieces come together, from the scent to the bench to the bottle.

Where the scent begins

Every scent we make begins with Marianella. She grew up making soap in her grandmother's kitchen in Venezuela, and that craft grew into a lifelong interest in scents and ingredients. Each of our fragrances comes from somewhere she has been. She works each one out with a fragrance house, using perfume-grade oils.

Rosewood and Litsea Cubeba is our clean, bright scent. Rosewood gives it a smooth, polished woodiness, litsea cubeba adds a lemony lift, and fresh bergamot rounds the two. Together they read as soft woods and citrus peel: balanced, modern and grounding on skin rather than sweet.

Why an oil and a cream

Both pieces are also sold on their own. The body oil gives skin glow and scent in one step; the cream gives deep, lasting moisture. Used together, they cover what neither does alone, and the instructions are simple enough to remember in a steamy bathroom: oil first, cream over it.

The oil is built on grape seed and apricot kernel oils, which spread lightly. Marula and argan add suppleness, pomegranate seed oil brings its punicic acid, mongongo adds a dry, silky touch, and vitamin E completes it. The cream starts with Kalahari melon seed oil, the light, golden oil our brand is built on, and adds aloe leaf juice and glycerin for hydration, with coconut, sunflower, jojoba, avocado, argan and borage seed oils.

We choose each ingredient for how it feels on the skin, how it sits and what it leaves behind. That is why the oil feels satiny rather than tacky and the cream feels velvety rather than greasy. Every ingredient in both is listed in our Ingredient Library, as it appears on the label.

Made in batches of 50 to 100

Both products are made by hand in our Williamsburg workshop, in batches of 50 to 100. That is small enough for the people making them to check how a texture feels and how a scent opens before a batch leaves the bench. Each batch is hand poured, hand labeled and hand packaged by the same people who made it.

We make what is needed rather than filling a warehouse. That means the oil and cream in your Body Glow were made recently, and little goes to waste. Working this way is slower, and we think it shows.

The look: David's side of it

Marianella makes every formula and every fragrance. Her son, David Foote, our Creative Director, gives them their look: the bottle, the label and the box. He has designed every piece of our packaging since our first bars of soap in 2007. If you smell it, it is Marianella's craft. If you see it, it is David's hand.

We use recyclable glass bottles and jars wherever we can, and plastic only where safety or stability calls for it.

The wider Rosewood family

The Body Glow belongs to a family of products in the same scent. The oil layers with our body wash, body cream, candle and room spray in Rosewood and Litsea Cubeba, and the scent also comes in our hand wash, hand cream and reed diffuser. You can buy the pieces on their own, such as the Rosewood and Litsea Cubeba Imperial Jade Body Oil, or in sets.

The most complete set is The Indulgent Body Box, which pairs the oil and cream with our Hawaiian Black Lava Body Caviar scrub and gold under eye masks. The smoky lava and the soft rosewood make a quiet contrast: dark and light, warm and fresh.

What has not changed

We started in 2007 with bars of soap in seven scents, sold three to a set. The tools are better now and there are more hands, but the approach is the one Marianella used at her kitchen table: small batches, ingredients chosen for a reason, and a scent that starts with a real place. We have never tested on animals, and we never will.

Questions about how the Rosewood Body Glow is made

Where is the Rosewood Body Glow made?

Both the body oil and the body cream are made by hand in our workshop in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, in batches of 50 to 100.

Who creates the Rosewood and Litsea Cubeba scent?

Marianella. She makes every fragrance we sell, working each one out with a fragrance house using perfume-grade oils.

Why is the scent the same in both products?

So the two layers build into one scent instead of competing. The oil opens it on warm skin and the cream settles it into a soft trace.

Is the Rosewood Body Glow tested on animals?

No. We have never tested on animals, and we never will.
