Hawaiian Black Lava Body Caviar is different from most body scrubs in three ways. It exfoliates with both sea salt and organic sugar, it carries a generous blend of plant oils, including Kalahari melon seed oil, and it is black: charcoal powder gives it its Hawaiian Black Lava color. The result is a scrub that polishes skin and leaves it feeling soft and cushioned rather than tight, in a musky, woodsy scent.
Here is what is in the jar and what each part does.
Salt and sugar, not one or the other
Most scrubs choose one crystal. Lava Body Caviar uses two. Sea salt and organic sugar buff away dull surface skin so it looks radiant. Used together, they give a texture that is firm enough to polish rough spots like heels and elbows, yet still comfortable over larger areas like the legs and back.
Both crystals soften and dissolve as you massage them with warm water, so the scrub feels firmer at the start and gentler as you go.
A scrub made with a lot of oil
Open the jar and the first thing you notice is the shine: the crystals glisten with oil. That is deliberate. The oils cushion the crystals so they glide over skin instead of dragging, and what stays behind after you rinse leaves skin feeling soft and moisturized.
The oils include coconut oil, which softens and conditions; passion fruit seed oil, a light, quick-absorbing oil from tropical South America; and Kalahari melon seed oil. Because the oils and crystals separate when the jar sits, the label asks you to stir it before each use. Stirred, it comes together as a thick, luxurious paste.
Kalahari melon seed oil
Kalahari melon seed oil is the hero ingredient of our brand. It is cold-pressed from the seeds of a wild melon that grows in the Kalahari of southern Africa and stores water through the dry season. The oil is clear and golden, light and dry to the touch, rich in linoleic acid, and it helps skin hold moisture without feeling greasy.
In a scrub, that light feel matters. It is part of why skin feels soft after rinsing rather than coated. You will find the same oil in our Royal Kalahari Face Serum and in our body cream, body wash and hand care.
Charcoal, for the color
The charcoal powder gives the scrub its deep black, lava-like color. That is its job in this formula, and we describe it that way. A lot of charcoal products are sold on bigger promises, but what you should expect here is a dramatic, dark scrub that rinses clean off the skin, not a charcoal mask.
The look is part of the pleasure. It looks like volcanic sand in the jar and makes a scrub feel like an occasion rather than a chore.
A real scent, not an afterthought
Some scrubs smell faintly of whatever oil they are made with. Lava Body Caviar is scented with Hawaiian Black Lava, one of our signature scents: musky and woodsy, with saffron and cedarwood. Marianella makes every fragrance we sell, working each one out with a fragrance house using perfume-grade oils.
Because it is one of our signature scents, you can carry it through the rest of your routine. The New Imperial Jade Body Oil, our body cream, body wash, hand care, candle, room spray and roller oil all come in Hawaiian Black Lava.
Made by hand, in small batches
Lava Body Caviar is made by hand in our Williamsburg workshop, in batches of 50 to 100, and filled and labeled by the same people who made it. We make what is needed rather than stocking a warehouse, so the jar you open was made recently.
If you want to read about the oils in more depth, each one is in our Ingredient Library.
What it is not
It is not a face scrub; it is for the body only, from the neck down. It is not a daily product; two or three times a week is plenty. And it is not a replacement for a leave-on moisturizer if your skin is very dry. It leaves skin soft, and a body oil on damp skin afterward keeps it that way. That is why we pair it with our body oils in the Imperial Body Glow Bundle and The Indulgent Body Box.
