goji berry seed oil

Why Goji Berry Seed Oil Belongs in Serums, Soaps, Lotions and Body Oils. (2026 Guide)

The first week the heat comes back on, the backs of your hands feel it before anyone touches the thermostat. Goji berry seed oil is worth knowing about for weeks like that. It's a light plant oil pressed from the seeds of the goji berry, Lycium barbarum, and it's made mostly of linoleic acid, with vitamin E and zeaxanthin as well. The goji berry seed oil benefits with the strongest support so far come from its fatty acids and its antioxidant activity. The research on skin itself is early but promising. Here's what the oil contains, what the studies found, and how to choose the best goji berry seed oil products in 2026.

What is goji berry seed oil?

The oil comes from the small seeds inside the red fruit. China is the world's largest producer of L. barbarum berries, which are widely cultivated in Qinghai, Gansu, and Ningxia provinces. Each berry gives very little oil: the fat content in goji berries is relatively low, generally ranging from 0.39% to 4.1% of the dry weight. It takes a lot of fruit to fill one bottle.

Goji berry seed oil benefits: what the research shows

Mostly linoleic acid

Almost all of the oil is unsaturated fatty acids, and linoleic acid makes up the biggest share. In one analysis of oil taken from dried goji seed, goji fruit oil contained linoleic acid (60.77%), oleic (21.69%), palmitic (8.23%). Other studies land close to that. Researchers describe goji as a natural source of unsaturated fatty acids (78.0–86.0 %) with a high content of n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids. A smaller share is omega-3: the a-linoleic acid, an essential fatty acid that belongs to the n-3 (omega-3) series of PUFA, ranges from 1.1% to 7.3%, depending on the sample.

For skin, one dermatology review suggests these seed oils may improve skin barrier and decrease transepithelial water loss through their ability to interact with the lipid matrix of the skin's outer layer. That review presents it as a theory, and we do too.

Vitamin E, zeaxanthin and antioxidant activity

Besides fatty acids, the oil contains smaller compounds. It is rich in unsaturated fatty acids such as alpha-linolenic acid and oleic acid, as well as micronutrients including vitamin E and Zeaxanthin. Zeaxanthin is the carotenoid that gives the berry part of its colour. In lab tests, L. barbarum seed oil exhibited excellent antioxidant activities in DPPH radical scavenging assay and β-carotene bleaching test. A 2025 review credits minor components such as tocopherols and phytosterols, which help neutralize free radicals and reduce oxidative stress.

What a recent study on UV-stressed skin found

One study tested the oil directly on skin, in mice. Oil from goji seed grown in China's Qaidam Basin effectively alleviated UV-induced histopathological changes in mouse skin. It also raised the skin's own antioxidant enzymes, while reducing levels of inflammatory cytokines and lowering MMP-1 and MMP-3, two enzymes that break down collagen. In the same study, the overall efficacy of QLBSO remained slightly below that of VE (vitamin E), the comparison treatment. These were mice, not people, and an oil is not a sunscreen.

What the research doesn't show yet

The honest summary is short. In the words of one review, there are only few peer-reviewed studies specifically describing cutaneous benefits of LB. Nobody has yet published a human trial with a clear percentage for hydration or fine lines. What we do have is a well-described oil, consistent antioxidant results in the lab and an encouraging animal study. That's a good reason to use it, and it isn't a miracle.

Goji berry seed oil in serums, soaps, lotions and body oils

What matters most is how long the oil stays on your skin. The benefits above come from what's left after you put the bottle down.

Serums and face oils

Here the oil stays on, so a few drops pressed into damp skin at night sit there for hours. If you want the antioxidant side of goji, this is the format that keeps it on your skin longest.

Lotions and creams

The oil also works in a cream. Researchers made a stable cream base with 15 % L. barbarum seed oil, and the emulsions were endowed with appreciable antioxidant properties. A lotion gives you goji in something you'll actually put on every day after the shower.

Body oils

A body oil covers the most skin: shins, forearms, shoulders, everywhere the dry indoor heat reaches first. It works best on skin that's still damp.

Soaps

Soap is on your skin for less than a minute before it rinses away. Goji in a bar adds to the wash itself. The longer-lasting benefits belong to what you leave on.

How to choose the best goji berry seed oil products in 2026

Choose the format for the result you want. For antioxidant care, pick a serum, oil or lotion. For a better wash, pick a soap.

Pay attention to freshness. All that linoleic acid comes with a catch: the more unsaturated the fat, the faster the oxidation reaction proceeds. How the oil is pressed makes a difference. In one comparison, the quantities of tocopherols, phenols, and phytosterols in hot-pressed oil were higher than those in oils extracted from other methods, and that oil kept best. Keep the bottle capped and out of direct sun, and use it while it smells fresh.

Know which part of the plant you're buying. "Goji" on a label can mean the seed oil or a fruit extract, and they're different ingredients.

FAQ

What are the main goji berry seed oil benefits for skin?

It's rich in linoleic acid and also contains vitamin E and zeaxanthin. In lab tests it showed antioxidant activity. In one animal study it reduced signs of UV stress in skin. Research on human skin is still limited.

Is goji berry seed oil the same as goji berry extract?

No. The seed oil is pressed from the seeds and is mostly fatty acids. Goji extract is made from the fruit and contains water-soluble compounds. Labels list them separately.

Can goji berry seed oil replace sunscreen?

No. The UV study was done on mice and tested the oil alongside UV exposure, not instead of protection. Wear sunscreen during the day and use goji as part of your care.

Does goji berry seed oil go off?

Yes, like any oil high in unsaturated fats it oxidizes over time. Keep it capped, away from heat and light, and stop using it if the smell turns sharp or stale.

Which format should I choose: serum, soap, lotion or body oil?

Choose a leave-on product, like a serum, lotion or body oil, if you want the oil to stay on your skin. Choose a soap if you want goji in your wash.
