The Story Behind Our Fragrance Roller Oils

The Story Behind Our Fragrance Roller Oils

Our Fragrance Roller Oils are the smallest thing we make and one of the most personal: a 0.3 fl oz bottle of sunflower seed oil carrying one of Marianella's scents, poured, labeled and packed by hand in our Williamsburg workshop. We made them so the scents that fill our candles and body creams could travel with you, in a pocket or a clutch, and be worn on the skin rather than sprayed into the air. This is how they come together, and who makes them.

Scents that start with a place

Every scent we make begins with somewhere Marianella has been. She grew up making soap in her grandmother's kitchen in Venezuela, and the pleasure she took in scents and ingredients never left her. When she sits down to build a new fragrance, she starts from a memory of a place: the coast, the mountains, a summer night in the city.

Moroccan Fig and Bergamot, the scent that has become our best seller across the whole range, carries the light of a warm Mediterranean coast. It opens crisp and juicy, with apple and grapefruit, and settles into plum and polished rosewood. Hawaiian Black Lava goes the other way: musky and woody, with saffron and cedarwood and a mineral depth underneath. Violet and Bergamot is the floral of the three, fresh and luxurious, with a cool edge of mint and green tea.

We sort our finished scents into three families, citrus, floral and musky, and the three rollers cover one of each. If you want a scent for every mood, the three together get you there.

From the fragrance house to the bench

Marianella still creates every formula and every fragrance we sell. For each scent she works with a fragrance house, using perfume-grade oils, and refines it with them until it is right. That fragrance then goes into everything that carries the name: the candle, the reed diffuser, the room spray, the body cream and the roller.

The roller is where the scent is at its most direct. In a candle, wax and flame shape how it fills a room. In a body cream, the scent is one part of a rich formula. In the roller there is only sunflower seed oil, a light, smooth carrier that glides on and leaves skin feeling moisturized, and the fragrance itself. What you smell on your wrist is the scent as Marianella built it.

Made by hand in Williamsburg

Like nearly everything we sell, the roller oils are made by hand in our workshop in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, in batches of 50 to 100. That is small enough to give each batch our full attention: how the scent opens on skin, how the oil feels and how the bottle looks before it leaves the bench. Each batch is hand poured, hand labeled and hand packaged by the same people who made it.

Working this way means we make what is needed rather than filling a warehouse, so the roller that reaches you was made recently. It is slower than the alternative, and we think you can tell.

The look of the bottle comes from David Foote, Marianella's son and our Creative Director, who has designed every piece of our packaging since the first bars of soap in 2007. A roller is a small canvas, but it gets the same attention as a full-size bottle of body cream.

Why we made a roller at all

Plenty of people love a scent and still do not wear perfume. Some find sprays too loud. Some find alcohol leaves their skin dry and tight. Some simply want a scent that stays close and does not fill a crowded room. A roller answers all three. The oil base wears softly near the skin, the ball puts it exactly where you want it, and there is no spray cloud and no alcohol sting.

It was also made for the bag rather than the dresser. The bottle is small, it closes securely, and you can reapply in a few seconds at a desk, on a train or before dinner without a mirror.

A small gift that says a lot

Because it is small and personal, the roller makes an easy gift. On its own it suits a birthday card or a thank-you. In The Home Allure Gift Set it joins a reed diffuser, a room spray and a set of gold under eye masks, all in Moroccan Fig and Bergamot or Hawaiian Black Lava, so the scent fills the home and goes out with its owner too.

We have never tested on animals, and we never will. That applies to the roller as much as to anything else we make.
