The Right Way to Apply Detox Gel: Amount, Pressure and Timing

Hand lifting the lid from a jar of Detox Gel

The right way to apply Detox Gel is a thin layer, pressed rather than rubbed into clean, slightly damp skin, followed by a short pause before your serum. Use it on face and neck after cleansing, morning and night, and leave it on: it is not a mask and it is not rinsed off. Get those few details right and the gel sinks in within a minute and leaves skin fresh, soft and ready for the next step.

Our Detox Gel with Kalahari Melon Seed Oil is a clear aloe gel with shea butter and Kalahari melon seed oil. It is easy to use, but the small things, how much, how damp, how you move your hands, decide whether it melts in or lingers. Here is the technique in detail.

How much to use

Less than you might expect. A pea-size amount covers most faces, and a little more covers the neck. The aim is a thin, even layer, not a coating. The gel comes in a generous 4 oz jar so you never need to ration it, but piling it on does not make it do more. It only takes longer to sink in.

Lift the gel out with clean, dry fingertips. Wet fingers carry water into the jar, and a cotton pad soaks up gel that should be on your skin.

Damp skin, not wet skin

Apply the gel within a minute of rinsing your face, or straight after a few spritzes of toner, while the skin is still faintly damp. That trace of water lets the aloe base spread in one smooth pass instead of dragging. Dripping wet is too much; the gel slides around and thins out. Pat once with a towel and you are in the right place.

Press first, then smooth outward

Rub the gel briefly between two fingertips so it softens. Then press it onto the skin in a few places: forehead, each cheek, chin. Pressing puts the gel where you want it before you start moving it around.

Now smooth it outward, from the center of the face toward the hairline and the ears, and finish with long strokes down the neck. Light pressure is enough. There is no need to massage in circles for a long time; the gel melts in on its own, and the first touch is pleasantly cool.

Give it a minute

Wait about a minute before the next layer. You will feel the change: the surface goes from slick to smooth and fresh. That is the moment to press in your serum, while the skin still feels fresh from the gel.

Our first choice to follow is The Royal Kalahari Face Serum. Warm a few drops between your fingertips and press them in. The two share Kalahari melon seed oil, and the serum spreads more easily over the gel than it does over bare skin.

Small mistakes worth avoiding

  • Rinsing it off. The gel is a leave-on step. Washing it away after a few minutes throws away the hydration it was meant to leave behind.
  • Applying it over yesterday's layers. The gel belongs on freshly cleansed skin. Over old sunscreen or makeup it has nothing clean to sit on.
  • Putting oil on first. Go from thinnest to richest. A face oil underneath stops the gel from spreading; on top, the oil sits comfortably over it.
  • Rushing the next layer. A serum or cream applied while the gel is still slick tends to slide around. One minute is all it takes.
  • Using too much. If the gel is still sitting on your skin after a couple of minutes, use less next time.
  • Leaving the lid off. Close the jar after each use and keep it away from a hot windowsill or radiator.

Morning and night

The technique is identical at both ends of the day. In the morning, follow the gel and serum with sunscreen; the gel is light enough that it does not get in the way of anything you wear over it, including makeup. At night, the serum or a face oil can be the last step.

If your skin is sensitive to tea tree oil, which gives the gel its clean, herbal scent, try a small patch along the jaw first.

Questions about applying Detox Gel

How much Detox Gel should I use each time?

A pea-size amount for the face and a little more for the neck. You want a thin, even layer that sinks in within a minute.

Should I rinse Detox Gel off?

No. It is a leave-on gel. Smooth it on after cleansing and follow with serum without rinsing.

Should I rub it in or press it in?

Press it onto the forehead, cheeks and chin first, then smooth it outward toward the hairline and down the neck with light pressure.

Can I put face oil on before the gel?

No. Put the gel on first and the oil after. Thin textures go under richer ones.
