Matrixyl 3000 and Argireline are two of the best-studied peptides in skincare, and they do different jobs. Matrixyl 3000 is a signal peptide complex that encourages skin to keep up its collagen, so fine lines look softer over a couple of months. Argireline is a hexapeptide that softens the small muscle movements behind expression lines, often within a few weeks. Both are in our Wrinkle Reducing Ultra Peptide Intensive Face Serum and our Wrinkle Reducing Ultra Peptide Intensive Night Cream, together with a third peptide, Snap-8. This is what each one does and why they belong together.
Matrixyl 3000: for the lines that come with time
Skin renews its collagen continuously, and as old collagen is broken down, small fragments are released that tell skin to make more. Matrixyl 3000 is built to resemble those fragments. Its peptides carry a fatty acid tail, palmitic acid, which helps them pass through skin's oily outer layer to where collagen is made.
The result is gradual. The supplier's own testing reported smoother skin and a smaller area of deep wrinkles after 56 days of use, and independent studies of the Matrixyl family point the same way over 8 to 12 weeks. Matrixyl 3000 does not change how a face moves. It works on the fine lines that are there even when your face is still, the ones that show on a dry morning or in side light.
Argireline: for the lines that come from expression
Some lines are drawn by movement: the vertical crease between the brows, the lines across the forehead, the fan at the outer corner of the eyes. Every smile and frown folds the skin in the same place, and over the years the fold stays.
Argireline works on the signal that tells those small facial muscles to contract. By softening that signal, it makes each contraction a little gentler, so the fold is a little shallower. In one study, a cream with 10% Argireline used twice a day for 28 days reduced the depth of lines around the eyes by about 30%. Most people who notice a change notice it within four to six weeks, sooner than with Matrixyl 3000, because it acts on movement rather than structure. The effect is gentle and lasts only while you keep using it.
Snap-8: Argireline's longer relative
Snap-8 is a longer peptide in the same family as Argireline, aimed at the same expression lines. Pairing the two gives the formula two routes to the same goal. Our serum's product page names all three peptides, Argireline, Matrixyl 3000 and Snap-8, and so does the night cream's.
Why the three work better together
Most faces have both kinds of line. Someone in their late thirties may have a few fine lines across the cheeks and a deeper crease between the brows, and those come from different causes. A formula with only a signal peptide addresses one; a formula with only Argireline addresses the other. Putting a signal peptide beside two expression-line peptides covers both in one step, and reviews of cosmetic peptides describe combinations like this as complementary.
The formulas that carry them
A peptide is only as good as the formula that carries it. Peptides are fragile: heat, light and the wrong partners break them down, and many are too large to cross skin easily. So the base around them matters.
- In the serum: a light, fast-absorbing rosehip seed oil base, centella asiatica for a calm, comfortable feel, sodium hyaluronate to help skin hold moisture, and ascorbyl palmitate, a vitamin C ester, with vitamin E for brightness and antioxidant care. It is naturally preserved with Leucidal and leaves skin soft, supple and luminous without heaviness.
- In the night cream: the same three peptides in a velvety cream with rosehip seed oil, sorbitol and sodium hyaluronate for lasting moisture, centella asiatica, ascorbyl palmitate and vitamin E, also preserved with Leucidal.
Made for us by a specialist lab
Everything else we sell is made by hand in our Williamsburg workshop in batches of 50 to 100. The two Ultra Peptide formulas are the exception: a specialist cosmetic lab makes them for us. They are our most intensive formulas, and we are open about where they come from.
Using them well
Both formulas are for the evening. Press two to four drops of the serum into clean skin and let them sink in for about a minute. Then massage a small amount of the night cream over face, neck and décolletage as your last step. You can use either one alone, or both together as The Ultra Peptide Duo. On nights you use retinol, skip the peptides and come back to them the next evening.
Give them time. Expression lines may look softer within a month; fine lines usually need two to three months of steady use.
Questions about Matrixyl 3000, Argireline and Snap-8
Which of your products contain Matrixyl 3000 and Argireline?
The Wrinkle Reducing Ultra Peptide Intensive Face Serum and the Wrinkle Reducing Ultra Peptide Intensive Night Cream. Both also contain Snap-8, and both come together in The Ultra Peptide Duo.
What is the difference between Matrixyl 3000 and Argireline?
Matrixyl 3000 encourages skin to keep up its collagen, for fine lines that show even when your face is still. Argireline softens the muscle movements behind expression lines.
Are the Ultra Peptide formulas handmade?
No. They are the one exception to our handmade line: a specialist cosmetic lab makes them for us.
Can I use the peptide serum in the morning?
Our product pages recommend the evening for both formulas. In the morning, a vitamin C serum and sunscreen are the better pairing.
