The right way to use Hawaiian Black Lava Body Caviar is to stir the jar, massage a scoop over wet skin from the neck down with medium pressure, rinse with warm water and pat dry, two or three times a week. Most of what goes wrong with a scrub comes from small habits around those steps: scrubbing too hard or too often, using it on the wrong skin, or letting the shower into the jar. Here are the dos and don'ts we would give a friend.
Do stir the jar every time
The label asks you to stir first, and it matters more than it looks. The oils rise and the sea salt and sugar settle while the jar sits. Stir it with a clean, dry spoon or your fingers until it comes together as a thick, glistening paste, and every scoop will have the right balance of crystals and oil.
Do wash first, then scrub
Use your body wash at the start of the shower, then the scrub, then rinse. If you wash after scrubbing, the soap takes away the coconut, passion fruit and Kalahari melon seed oils that the scrub leaves behind, and those oils are what make skin feel soft afterward.
Don't use it on your face
Lava Body Caviar is for the body only, never the face. The skin on your face is thinner and more delicate than the skin on your legs and arms, and a salt and sugar scrub is made for the body.
Don't scrub freshly shaved skin
Shaving already takes a layer off the surface. Scrub right after and skin can sting or look red. Scrub a day before you shave, or wait a day after. The same goes for skin that is sunburned or feels irritated: leave it alone until it has settled.
Do use medium pressure
The crystals do the work. Sea salt and organic sugar buff away dull surface skin as you massage them in slow circles. Pressing hard does not make skin smoother, it only makes it sensitive. Spend a little longer on heels, knees and elbows instead of pressing harder everywhere.
Don't use it every day
Two or three times a week is plenty for most skin. On the days between, wash, rinse and moisturize as usual. If skin starts to feel tender, take a few days off.
Don't let the shower into the jar
Water in the jar dissolves the crystals and changes the texture. Scoop what you need before you step under the water, or reach in with dry fingers, close the lid tightly between uses, and keep the jar out of the direct spray.
Do watch your step, and the grout
A scrub this rich in oil leaves some of it on the shower floor, so rinse the floor before you step out and take care as you do. The charcoal powder is deeply pigmented: it rinses off skin easily, but it can mark light grout, bath mats or pale towels if it is left to sit. Rinse the shower as you go and dry off with a darker towel on scrub days.
Do pat, don't rub
After rinsing, the oils stay on your skin as a light, soft layer. A brisk rub with a towel pulls much of it away. Pat dry instead, and skin will feel polished and cushioned, never tight.
Do follow with a body oil
While skin is still damp, smooth on a body oil. The product page recommends our New Imperial Jade Body Oil, which comes in the same Hawaiian Black Lava scent. If you want a cream as well, our Rejuvenating Body Cream goes over the oil.
Questions about scrubbing the right way
Can I use Lava Body Caviar right after shaving?
Better not. Scrub a day before you shave, or wait a day after, so freshly shaved skin does not sting.
Will the charcoal stain my towels?
It rinses off skin easily, but it can mark pale towels, bath mats or light grout if left to sit. Rinse the shower as you go and use a darker towel on scrub days.
What if my skin feels sensitive after scrubbing?
Ease off. Use lighter pressure, scrub less often, and give skin a few days to settle before you scrub again.
Can I keep the jar in the shower?
You can, as long as it stays out of the direct spray and the lid is closed tightly. Keeping water out of the jar keeps the texture right.
