To use our Hydrating Hand Cream, press out about an almond's worth (one press of the pump covers both hands), warm it between your palms for a few seconds, then work it over the backs of your hands, between your fingers, into the cuticles and around the wrists. It sinks in within a minute and leaves a soft-touch finish with no grease. Use it after you wash your hands, first thing in the morning and last thing at night.
That is the whole method. Below is each step in more detail, how often to apply it, and what to keep beside it at the sink.
What the cream is
Our Hydrating Hand Cream with Kalahari Oil is a light, silky cream for hands that work hard and dry out. Its base is Kalahari melon seed oil, a light oil rich in linoleic acid that helps skin hold moisture. Aloe leaf juice and glycerin add a cool layer of hydration, and coconut, sunflower, jojoba, avocado, argan and borage oils cushion dry skin and leave hands supple. A little vitamin E (tocopherol) completes the blend.
It comes in a 16 fl oz pump bottle, in four scents: Moroccan Fig and Bergamot, Hawaiian Black Lava, Violet and Bergamot, and Rosewood and Litsea Cubeba.
How to apply it, step by step
1. Dispense about an almond's worth
One press of the pump is enough for both hands. If your hands are very dry, or it is the last application of the day, take a little more.
2. Warm it between your palms
Press your palms flat together for three or four seconds before you start spreading. A slightly warmed cream moves across the skin in one pass instead of three.
3. Backs of the hands first
Lay one palm over the back of the other hand and sweep from the knuckles to the wrist, a few times, then switch. The backs of the hands take the weather and every wash, so they get the cream while there is most of it.
4. Interlace your fingers and slide
Lace your fingers together and pull your hands apart slowly, so the cream travels down the length of each finger and into the webbing between them. The sides of the fingers are easy to miss and are often where dryness lingers.
5. Cuticles, one at a time
Use the pad of your thumb to press small circles at the base of each nail, about ten seconds per hand. The jojoba, avocado and argan oils in the blend soften the skin here.
6. Finish at the wrists
Ring one wrist with the opposite hand and twist gently, once each way. Stop when the cream has gone from the surface.
The whole sequence takes twenty to thirty seconds. Because the cream sinks in so quickly, you can pick up a pen, a phone or a page well within a minute without leaving marks.
How often to use it
- After every wash. Washing takes moisture out; the cream, with its glycerin and plant oils, puts comfort back. This is the most useful habit of all.
- In the morning. A full application before the day starts means your hands begin with a reserve rather than catching up.
- After anything hard on your hands. Dishes, cleaning, gardening, a cold walk.
- Last thing at night. Hands go hours without a wash while you sleep, so this is the time for a slightly more generous layer.
In autumn and winter, when indoor heating dries the air, most people find they need a few more applications a day than in summer. A small amount, often, does more than a heavy layer once.
What to keep beside it
The cream works best right after washing, so keep it next to the soap. Our Hydrating Hand Wash with Kalahari Oil is a castile-style liquid soap that lathers softly and leaves hands comfortable rather than tight, and it comes in the same scents as the cream. Wash, shake off the water, and reach for the cream while your hands are still faintly damp.
If you want both at once, the Hand Wash & Hand Cream Bundle pairs them in one matching scent.
Questions about using Hydrating Hand Cream
How much hand cream should I use?
About an almond's worth, or one press of the pump, for both hands. Take a little more at night or when your hands are very dry.
Does this hand cream leave hands greasy?
No. It sinks in within a minute and leaves a soft-touch finish, so you can go straight back to a keyboard, paper or a phone screen.
Can I use it on my cuticles?
Yes. Press small circles at the base of each nail with the pad of your thumb. The jojoba, avocado and argan oils soften the skin there.
Why does it come in a 16 fl oz bottle?
Because hand cream only helps if it is within reach. The large pump bottle is made to live beside a sink and be used many times a day.
