How to Use a Fragrance Roller Oil: Where, When and How Much

To use a Fragrance Roller Oil, roll it lightly over your pulse points, one or two passes on each, and let it settle without rubbing. The best spots are the inner wrists, the base of the throat, behind the ears and along the collarbone, and the best moment is just after your body cream, before you dress. That is the whole method; the rest of this guide covers how much, where, when, and a few things worth knowing before the first roll.

What is in the bottle

Our Fragrance Roller Oils hold two things: sunflower seed oil and our own fragrance. Sunflower is a light, smooth oil that glides easily and leaves skin feeling moisturized. There is no alcohol, so the scent does not leap off the skin the way a spray does. It wears close, opens with your warmth and softens gently over the hours.

Each bottle holds 0.3 fl oz and has a steel roller ball. There are three scents: Hawaiian Black Lava, musky and woody; Violet and Bergamot, a fresh floral; and Moroccan Fig and Bergamot, crisp and juicy citrus.

How much to use

Less than you think. The ball releases a small, even amount with each pass, so one or two passes per spot is right. That gives a thin layer the skin can take in, rather than a film that sits on top.

If you want a stronger scent, do not pile on more passes in the same place. Add another spot instead. Three spots with one pass each will smell fuller, and wear better, than one spot with six.

Where to apply it

Scent rises from warm skin, so the places where blood runs close to the surface work best. In rough order of how often we use them:

  • Inner wrists. The classic spot, and the easiest to reach in a hurry. Remember that wrists get washed often, so they are usually the first place to need a touch-up.
  • Base of the throat. Warm and close to your face, so you will notice the scent yourself through the day.
  • Behind the ears. Quieter and more personal; good for evenings and close company.
  • Along the collarbone. A soft, wide line of scent that sits just under a neckline.
  • Inner elbows. Especially good in warm months, when sleeves are short.
  • Backs of the knees and ankles. Lower pulse points that release scent upward as you move.

Keep the roller off your face. It is made for the body, and your face care can then stay exactly as it is.

When to apply it

In the morning, roll it on as the last step of your body care, after body cream and before you get dressed. Scent on bare skin, with a minute to settle, lasts better than scent rolled onto fabric.

During the day, carry it. A pass on each wrist in the afternoon brings the scent back in seconds, without a mirror and without a spray cloud in a shared office.

In the evening, use it the same way before going out, or wear a single pass on the collarbone for something quiet before bed.

There is no wrong time and no limit on how often. Use it as often as you like the smell of it.

Make it last longer

Moisturized skin holds scent longer than dry skin. That is the single most useful thing to know about any roller oil. Smooth a body cream such as our Rejuvenating Body Cream over the spots you plan to scent, let it sink in for a minute, then roll. If you skip the cream, at least apply the roller while your skin still has a little moisture from the shower.

Before the first roll: sensitive skin

Fragrance can bother some skin, so if yours is sensitive, try the roller on a small patch of your inner arm and wait a day before wearing it on the throat or behind the ears. Sunflower seed oil is generally gentle, but people allergic to plants in the daisy family, which includes the sunflower, should patch test first.

Carrying it with you

The roller was made for the bag. It fits a pocket, a clutch or a gym bag, closes securely, and is small enough to slip into a carry-on liquids bag. Keep it with you during the day and at room temperature at night, out of hot cars and away from sunny windowsills, and recap it after every use.

Questions about using the roller oil

How many passes should I use on each spot?

One or two. For more scent, add another pulse point rather than more passes in the same place.

Can I use it every day?

Yes. It is a light sunflower seed oil with fragrance, made to be worn daily and reapplied whenever you like.

Which spot makes the scent last longest?

Places that stay warm and do not get washed often, such as the base of the throat, behind the ears and the collarbone, usually hold scent longer than the wrists.

Can I take it on a plane?

Yes. At 0.3 fl oz it fits easily in a carry-on liquids bag, and the roller ball means there is no spray to leak.
