What Fig and Leather Smell Like, and Why They Lead in 2026

A fig fragrance is built from the whole fig tree rather than the fruit alone: the soft, jammy fruit, the sharp green leaf and the dry wood of the branch. That mix of sweet, green and woody is why fig became the defining fragrance note of 2026. It smells fresher and stranger than an ordinary fruit note, and this year much of the industry arrived at it together. Tom Ford, YSL and Marc Jacobs have all released fig fragrances, Who What Wear called fig the coolest scent of 2026, and NewBeauty credits its rise to a green-meets-sweet quality somewhere between a Mediterranean orchard and a cold drink on a hot day. The year's other big note is leather, softened and warmed with tobacco and oud. Here is what each one smells like, and how to choose.

The three smells inside a fig

Most fruit notes in perfumery give you one register, sweetness. Fig gives you three.

  • The fruit. Jammy, soft and faintly milky, the part that makes fig feel comforting.
  • The leaf. Sharp, green and almost bitter when crushed between the fingers. This is the part that keeps fig from smelling like dessert.
  • The branch. Dry, pale wood underneath, which gives the note its staying power on skin and in a room.

The contrast between those three is why perfumers describe fig as nuanced and a little edgy rather than simply fruity. It can smell fresh and creamy in the same breath, and that tension is what makes it wearable in January and in August.

How fig went from insider note to everywhere

This was not one viral moment. Who What Wear, ELLE, NewBeauty, Marie Claire and Harper's Bazaar all landed on fig in the spring and summer of 2026, and the coverage did not cool going into fall. When outlets with very different readers reach the same conclusion in the same season, interest tends to hold rather than spike and vanish.

The older houses got there first. Diptyque's Figuier candle remains one of the house's top sellers, and Le Labo's Figue 15 has held cult status for years. What changed this year is that the big fashion houses joined in, and a note that once signaled quiet insider taste now sits on every beauty counter. That is usually the moment people start looking for a version that is not the same bottle everyone else owns.

What perfumers pair with fig

Fig rarely stands alone. Four pairings come up again and again in this year's coverage.

  • Coconut, for a creamy, edible, comforting effect.
  • Citrus, to lift the fruit and keep it bright.
  • Woods such as sandalwood or vetiver, to anchor the green.
  • Herbs. Marie Claire points to blends of basil, fig, rosemary and citrus that smell like a kitchen garden in full sun.

Why we chose bergamot

Our Moroccan Fig and Bergamot takes the citrus route. Bergamot is the bright, slightly bitter citrus that gives Earl Grey tea its character, and set against fig it keeps the fruit from tipping into dessert. In our blend it opens fresh, with apple and grapefruit, and settles onto plum and polished rosewood. Like every scent Marianella makes, it began with a place, and it carries the light of a warm Mediterranean coastline. It is still our best-selling scent. It was not made in response to a trend report. The pairing is simply good, and the 2026 coverage happens to describe it closely: green first, sweet second.

Leather, the year's other note

Fig is not the only note moving. Leather, long a favorite of niche perfumery, is reaching a wider audience, and its character has changed. The heavy, traditionally masculine leather of the last decade has given way to softer, more versatile versions, and perfumers now build it alongside tobacco and oud for warmth rather than edge.

Our Oud Tobacco and Leather sits in that warmer, softer family. We describe it as smoky and deep in the candle, musky and smoky in the Reed Diffuser and the Room Spray. Oud gives resinous depth, tobacco gives the dry warmth of aged leaf, and leather rounds the whole thing off rather than dominating it. It is a home scent only: you will find it in the candle, diffuser and spray, not in our body or hand care.

Choosing between them

Fig and leather are not in competition. They suit different hours and different rooms.

  • Choose fig for daylight rooms. Kitchens, bathrooms and anywhere that gets morning sun. Bergamot is at its best in daylight, and fig is the one you can also wear, in body cream, hand cream, body wash and roller oil.
  • Choose leather for evening rooms. The living room, the study, a reading chair. It belongs to the hour when the lamps go on.
  • Try both in one home. A fig diffuser by the kitchen sink and a leather candle by the sofa keep their distance, and the house starts to tell the time.

If you are new to both, start small. A Fragrance Roller Oil in Moroccan Fig and Bergamot tells you within a day whether fig suits your skin, and a room spray in Oud Tobacco and Leather lets you test the darker note before you commit to a candle.

Wearing fig, not just burning it

A candle scents a room while it burns. Fig on skin follows you through the day. The Hydrating Hand Cream in Moroccan Fig and Bergamot catches the green side of the note every time you wash up, and the Rejuvenating Body Cream holds the softer side on your wrists and arms. Both are made with Kalahari melon seed oil, the light oil our brand is built on, to help skin hold moisture.

Questions about fig and leather scents

What does a fig fragrance actually smell like?

Green, creamy and lightly woody rather than purely sweet. The fruit gives softness, the leaf a sharp green snap, and the branch dry wood underneath. It behaves more like a garden than a dessert.

Is fig a summer scent?

It reads as summery because of its Mediterranean associations, but the creamy, woody side carries it well into fall and winter. A citrus pairing like bergamot keeps it fresh in warm weather.

Is leather too heavy for everyday?

The 2026 versions are much softer than older leather scents. Built with tobacco and oud, it reads warm and smoky rather than harsh, and it suits evening rooms best.

Can I wear Oud Tobacco and Leather on skin?

Not from us at the moment. Our Oud Tobacco and Leather comes as a candle, reed diffuser and room spray. For a scent to wear, choose Moroccan Fig and Bergamot or Hawaiian Black Lava in the roller oil.
